Between the Lines:
Gaining context on marginalized musicians through close reading of archival materials.
Under-represented musicians, especially those who exist in near or far history, suffer from a lack of documentation, social and historical context, and a general lack of attention in modern research. While some of this is due to outdated priorities which created marginalization, these important musicians also present challenges as there are frequently missing or non-existent archival sources. This creates a desert of information, limiting our ability to gain understanding of important figures that belong in our music history.
With an initial focus on digital archives, this course seeks to offer tools to respectfully contextualize under-represented artists by 1) looking for undiscovered references to artists and their work 2) considering social context to newly found or existing archival information and 3) using reception history as a way of deepening our understanding of under-represented individuals and their integral contribution to music history. The goal for all research undertaken in the class is to bring light and attention to previously overlooked areas of our shaped past and create firm foundations for other historians to build on in the future.
